January 18 – Requirements of discipleship

The disciple of Christ is earnestly trying to live the highest and best life, for the Christian life is the highest kind of life the world knows anything about, thus to be a true Disciple of Jesus means.

Undated sermon (probably 1930s), The Requirements of Discipleship

For reflection

Henry pinpoints the heart of what it means to be a true Disciple of Jesus; to live the ‘highest’ life, a life that even the world has no explanation for.

When you read the complete manuscript of this sermon, and many others like it, you realize that Henry is fully aware that living the Christian life within one’s own strength and means is not possible.

Instead, living an authentic Christian life requires one to be in constant fellowship and empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Are you living the highest life possible for a Disciple? How?

What evidence do you have in your life that can nly be accounted for as a genuine work of the Holy Spirit?

What are some areas in your life that still need to be brought under the Lordship of Christ?
