Scripture Lesson:–St. John 11: 38-44.
Introduction:– First of all, we need to realize that we too are dead in trespasses by our Lord Jesus. We are like the convict, “dead in our trespasses” and our only hope, the pardon of the governor, a complete pardon. Had God forgiven you? If so, then you are burdened for others.
The first stone that we need to roll away is the stone of faith without works. He said, “Ye cry in Lord, Lord, and do not the things that I have commanded thee.” We pray that God will save out community, but we never get around to doing anything about it ourselves. Jesus does not do for us what we can do for ourselves. Speaking, speaking this is a lazy generation. To lazy to pray, too lazy to visit a neighbor in the interest of his soul.
Practices of charity without the right motive. “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him”. All of our gifts, deeds, works, teaching, preaching, count for us nothing unless done in the name of Jesus and for his glory. We have many clubs, etc that are doing many of these things for their own glory. We must awake quickly to the truth that he has promised his added blessings only when when things are done in his name.
Pride. Prov: 8:13. “Pride do I hate”. I am thinking of pride that exhibits a spirit of independence. An attitude that says, “Why should I bow before the Lord”. Intellectual pride. Do not believe in miracles. Their intellectual pride has given them a license to place Christ the miracles worker on the shelf. If we tell them how to be saved, they consider to know more about Christ then we do. They refuse to exercise faith in God that that expect us to have in them. They profess to believe only in what they can see, hear, or touch.
Then there is the stone of Profound Unbelief. “And he could there do no mighty work and he marveled because of their unbelief” Mk: 6:7. We do not believe the spoken word of the Lord. He cannot work through because we do not permit him to. Our unbelief has prevented him.
Oh that we might roll away these stones of unbelief and hear Jesus cry, “ Dead men, come forth. Dead churches come forth and live. He would free us from human personalities, from the lusts of the world, from self-will, Yea he would free us from the fears of this life, from the fears of death and eternity.
